FairFuelUK e-petition not yet debated

FairFuelUK e-petition not yet debated
28 October 2011

FairFuelUK (FFUK) has slammed the government over its failure to debate the high price of fuel in parliament, despite the FFUK e-petition achieving the required 100,000 signatures on 30 September.

Under the government’s e-petition initiative, those that attract 100,000 signatures are "eligible for debate" in the House of Commons, although this is not guaranteed.

Two hearings in front of of the Back Bench Committee of the House of Commons have taken place with Robert Halfon MP putting forward the case for a full debate on fuel prices. But the hearings appear to have proven fruitless.

FFUK, which is lead by Peter Carroll, describes the lack of progress as “outrageous and unacceptable” in a statement issued today (28 October).

It adds: "We now believe that our campaign is being pushed from pillar to post. This leaves the 100,000-plus signees to the petition without the debate that they were lead to believe would happen."

FFUK is calling on supporters to contact their local MP and push for a fuel price debate. Those wishing to do so can go to http://action.fairfueluk.com/debate to identify their local MP and make use of a template email to make their views known.
