Drop in Truck Accident Levels
The latest statistics from the Department for Transport show a fall in the number of accidents involving HGVs.
The number of accidents and collisions involving HGVs and trucks in 2010 fell by almost 1,200 to around 6,400, according to the latest statistics from the Department for Transport. The figure shows those accidents that led to a police presence and reflect an overall fall in accidents from 2009 levels. In total there were 6% fewer casualties in road accidents reported to the police during 2010.
The Department for Transport estimates that 9,700 reported casualties (5% of the total) occurred while someone was driving over the legal alcohol limit.
Simon Best, Chief Executive of the Institute of Advanced Motorists said the drop will have a positive effect on the nations finances. “The value of preventing each fatal crash on UK roads is around £1.8 million, and approximately £200,000 for each serious injury – it’s clear that effective road safety initiatives not only save lives but also save the nation money.”
