£1.5m Birmingham lorry park to open in March
A new £1.5m truckstop opening in Birmingham is expected to alleviate freight crime in the region, report from RoadTransport.com
A 32-space lorry park in Brewery Street is under construction and due for completion by mid-March, according to Birmingham City Council. The site has toilets, showers, electronic gates and CCTV.
It is the first dedicated truckstop in the city centre since the closure of the Masshouse Coach and Lorry Park in 2002.
PC Steve Rounds, CV lead at the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), says the lorry park is vital at a time when freight crime is so high, such as a 59% hike in the number of thefts of trucks last year. He hopes truck crime in the region will now fall as a result of more secure parking spaces.
He says: "I have been working for some time to improve conditions for the commercial driver, both within the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the Department for Transport. It is great to see the needs of lorry drivers being taken into consideration."
Truckers will be charged between £12-£15 per night for use of the park.
